Ageing

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT ARE THE FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE SKIN AGEING?

Several factors are involved in the ageing process. These include excessive sun exposure, loss of subcutaneous fat, unhealthy life style choices (such as smoking and excessive drinking of alcohol), environmental pollution, psychological stress, and obesity.

WHAT ARE THE AGE-RELATED CHANGES IN SKIN?
  • Thinning of the outer layer of skin, (epidermis), hence the skin becomes thinner.
  • Skin becomes increasingly fragile.
  • Blood vessel walls thin and become fragile resulting in increased bruising.
  • Skin can become rougher in texture.
  • Reduction of skin elasticity due to loss of elastin, causing the skin to lose firmness.
  • Loss of facial contours, midface ptosis as well as the development of jowls occur due to bone changes, muscle atrophy and the loss of deep pads of fat under the skin.
CAN SKIN AGEING BE DELAYED?

We can delay the skin ageing by taking preventative. These include avoiding excessive sun exposure/ use of sunbeds, regular use of sun protection (such as Obagi SPF 50 or Heliocare SPF50), using a skin moisturiser and maintain a healthy life style such as stopping smoking will make a significant difference to the health of the skin.

WHAT ARE THE NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO ADDRESS SKIN AGEING?

Sutton and Epsom Cosmetic Clinic offers a range of solutions to address skin changes as a result of ageing.

Earlier signs of ageing can be effectively addressed by:

  • Skin Treatment systems such as Obagi Medical range. Obagi Nu-Derm System works by exfoliating the dead skin and rejuvenating the unhealthy skin cells in the deeper layer of the skin.
  • Chemical Peels such as Obagi Blue Peel Radiance work by exfoliating the dead skin.
  • Microneedling works by increasing the thickness of the skin and producing collagen.
  • Platelet Rich Plasma(PRP), commonly referred as ‘’Vampire facial’’ or ‘’ Dracula therapy’’ works by producing growth factors that stimulate skin cell growth.
  • Botox is effective for treating face wrinkles.
  • Dermal fillers are used to treat wrinkles, folds, volume related changes and age-related changes due to skin dehydration.

For more advances signs of ageing, we offer a wide range of treatments such as

  • Botox® for face and neck
  • Dermal fillers for wrinkle treatment and face and hand volume replacement
  • Non-surgical face lifts, involving use of absorbable threads or dermal fillers.
  • Sculptra® that works by stimulating collagen and replacing the lost volume and collagen in areas like face and hands.
  • Fat injections to replace the lost fat because of ageing in areas such as face and hands
  • Platelet rich plasma to help with skin rejuvenation
  • Deep chemical peels such as Obagi Blue Peel help with advanced ageing related changes in the skin.
  • Vaginal rejuvenation using dermal fillers and Platelet Rich Plasma to address the age-related changes and improve sexual health.

Some individuals may need a combination of non-surgical cosmetic treatments with surgical intervention to achieve optimum results.
