Thread veins, also called spider veins, are tiny prominent veins just below the skins surface. They tend to branch and give a spidery sort of pattern hence their common name. Spider veins can occur anywhere on the body but most often on the legs and face
Spider veins can affect men and women of any age. Typically, they are appear on the nose and cheek area.
The exact cause of thread veins is unknown. Researchers believe several causes may contribute to their development such as genetic and environmental factors, or a combination of both. It’s believed that most cases of spider veins are caused by chronic exposure to the sun or extreme temperatures. This is because they usually appear on the body where skin is often exposed to sunlight and air.
At Sutton and Epsom Cosmetic clinic we use Short wave diathermy to treat facial thread veins. Short wave diathermy is an effective method for treating thread veins and spider veins on the face. This involves an electrical current being passed through the vein using a fine needle. The electrical current cauterises the target blood vessel and gradually over a period of weeks it disintegrates, and thread veins become much less noticeable. It is normal to experience some redness and puffiness in the treated area, this is usually resolved within a few days following treatment. Clients are reviewed between 4 to 6 weeks post procedure when repeat treatment may be administered if necessary.
